Bedford & Strand in Covent Garden sets the tone for a new breed of wine bar/bistro beginning to appear across London

Bedford & Strand Wine Room and Bistro was opened late last year by a group of friends in the wine and bar industry, and judging by the hordes of suits and well-heeled ladies, it has already become a magnet for local business-types. Bedford & Strand is situated at the bottom end of Bedford Street in Covent Garden, just off of The Strand, and is perfectly positioned for most of the West End's many theatres. From the rows of Perrier-Jouët lining the dark-wood bar to the black and white tiles throughout and rustic wooden furniture, Bedford & Strand has broken the mould of the conventional London wine bar. As with the overall look of the bar, the food offering at Bedford & Strand follows the theme of a traditional French bistro too: well-spiced steak tartare topped with the raw yolk of a quail's egg, great moules-frites (excellent value at £8) & a custardy creme brulee to finish. The wine list is also a real hit too, with Chapel Down Bacchus from Kent & Pendarves Verdelho from Australia alongside better-known grape varieties from distinctive, quality producers. Bedford & Strand is a welcome new addition to the Covent Garden dining scene and judging by its popularity, will be around for many years to come.
