Type of cuisine: Modern British
Average price: £35.00 Nearest tube: Clapham South
After heading up the kitchen at Quaglino’s, Craig James has now gone solo and has opened up the self named Brasserie James in London’s Clapham South. Perched on Balham Hill. This excellent neighbourhood eatery has proved to be a big hit amongst the area’s local upmarket crowd. Chocolate brown leather banquettes, exposed brick walls and splashes of red make for a chic setting where the menu mixes up Modern British with French touches. Only top notch suppliers are used to produce first class dishes such as mussels and seared scallops with roast tomatoes and rocket, grilled mackerel on mustard potato salad and fillet of beef with tomato and bordelaise sauce. Desserts include temptations such as cherry tart with clotted cream or rosé wine and summer berry jelly. Brunch is a big hit at the weekends as are the weekday fixed price menus. The wine list offers plenty of by the glass options, most of which are French. Brasserie James has been an immediate hit in the Clapham/Balham area, where an unpretentious style and great food are always a winning combination.
